Illustration hemoglobin sickle cell anemia

Illustration of a sickle cell hemoglobin, that is, a hemoglobin in sickle cell anemia.

Background

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disease characterized by an abnormal shape of red blood cells. The cause of the disease is a genetic defect (point mutation) that leads to the formation of altered hemoglobin. This “sickle cell hemoglobin” in turn leads to the deformation of erythrocytes (red blood cells). These can clump together and block small blood vessels. Seizure-like and painful circulatory disorders (sickle cell crises) can also occur.

Project decription:

Design of an illustration of a hemoglobin protein with point mutation in the HBB gene based on 3D structural data. The altered regions of the protein are highlighted (blue color).
