Illustration mitral valve insufficiency – alfieri stitch

Illustrations of reduction of mitral regurgitation by suturing the mitral valve leaflets (modified Alfieri stitch).

Design of two illustrations for a scientific publication of the Triemli City Hospital. The subject of the publication was an investigation into the surgical operation for mitral valve insufficiency. The procedure is based on a reconstruction method of the heart surgeon Alfieri, in which the two mitral leaflets are sutured together, which leads to a reduction of the insufficiency. However, in this case a clip is used which can be inserted percutaneously.

The first illustration shows a view through the aortic valve to the left ventricle. Nerve hooks are passed through the aortic valve and spread apart the chordae tendineae of the mitral valve. The second illustration shows a view of the left ventricle with a view of the mitral valve. Here, the two leaflets are joined by Teflon clips and sutures.
