Background:

Skin grafting involves transplanting healthy skin tissue to cover and heal wounds, injuries or burns that have caused extensive damage to the skin. This type of procedure is usually performed on patients with severe wounds because the healthy skin can help prevent infection, reduce scarring and promote healing. The skin replacement tissue can come from the patient’s own body, from a cadaver, or from artificial skin.

Description:

Mode-of-action animation showing the functioning of a skin substitute for the treatment of severe wounds, which is made from cod skin. Unlike other types of skin substitutes (such as pig skin), the fish skin in Kerecis still contains a whole range of natural skin components such as omega3, elastin, fibronectin, laminin, glycans, proteoglycans, lipids. These support wound healing e.g. by activating platelets.

The pore structure of the skin substitute enables rapid ingrowth of blood vessels and fibroblasts and the formation of granulation tissue, thus accelerating the healing process.
