Illustration of the progression of a chronic inflammation of the esophagus.

Design of an illustration on the progression of eosinophilic esophagitis. The illustration shows the changes of the esophagus from chronic inflammation to fribrosis in a sectional view of the esophagus, an esophagoscopy and a histological view of the different stages of the disease. In the inflammatory stage, an increased number of eosinophilic granulocytes can be seen in the cell section of the tissue. As the disease progresses, the esophagus fibroses, strictures form, and the entrance to the stomach is significantly narrowed.

The diagram in the lower part shows the rate of stages of the disease in different age groups and the corresponding type of treatment (diet, drug therapy, medical intervention – dilatation of the esophagus.
