Background:
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons in the shoulder joint that stabilize the joint and support the movements of the arm. The muscles include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. When the rotator cuff is torn (ruptured), the tendon part of one or more muscles is damaged (partial tear / partial rupture) or completely torn (tear / total rupture).
Project desscription:
For use in doctor-patient communication and on the website of the SportClinic Zurich, we conceptualized and designed an animation for the treatment of a rotator cuff rupture.
The animation starts with the presentation of the anatomy of the rotator cuff and naming of the muscles involved. The rotator cuff rupture is exemplified by a partial tear of the supraspinatus muscle. Subsequently, the surgical measures for the treatment of the injury are explained. First, disconnected parts of the tendon are removed from the humerus. Now two suture anchors are inserted into the humerus and the infraspinatus is pulled laterally, to the site of its natural attachment to the humerus, by means of sutures. Two more suture anchors are used to fix the infraspinatus in this position in order to regain normal pain-free shoulder function after a period of convalescence.
