Graphic MDR1 mutation

Graphic showing the causes and effects of a gene defect in multidrug resistance protein-1 in some dog breeds.

The MDR1 gene defect occurs mainly in the Collie or related breeds. As a result, the P-glycoprotein is either insufficiently produced or not produced at all, which has significant effects on the function of the blood-brain barrier, kidney, intestine, liver and hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. The cause lies in the absence of a few base pairs of the dog’s DNA.
