Illustration neovascular macular degeneration

Design of illustrations for age-related wet macular degeneration (nAMD).

nAMD is a special form of age-related macular degeneration. Approximately 20 percent of AMD patients suffer from this form of retinal disease. In addition to small yellowish deposits (drusen) under the retina, pathologically altered blood vessels have grown under the retina. As a result, fluids or blood are deposited in the retina, which consequently swells. As a result, the patient’s vision decreases.

Three illustrations were created for the project. The first illustration shows a healthy eye in sagital section with the anatomical strutures of the eye (iris, cornea, choroid, lens, eye muscle, optic nerve, macula, retina with blood vessels). The second illustration showed an altered macula (yellow spot) with the clinical picture of neovascular macular degeneration: drusen and hemorrhages of ingrown blood vessels. In a third illustration an injection with an active substance into the vitreous body of the diseased eye was visualized.
