Illustration melanocyte

Medical illustration of a melanocyte (pigment cell) in the basal layer (stratum basale) and the spinal layer (stratum spinosum) of the skin.

Melanocytes are specialized cells found predominantly in the stratum basale of the epidermis and are responsible for the production of the pigment melanin. Melanin protects the skin and other tissues from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

The illustration shows a sectional view of the skin. A melanocyte (pigment cell) can be seen in the stratum basale of the skin, whose branches extends into the stratum spinosum and has melanin pigments.
