Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing is repeatedly disturbed or blocked during sleep. The cause is a slackening of the muscles in the throat area and in the neck during sleep, which leads to temporary breathing pauses (apnea).
We created various illustrations and graphics for the topic. In one illustration, we depicted the normal breathing process in a sectional view (sagittal section of head + neck).
In another illustration we showed the blockage of the airway in the throat area.
In a third illustration we showed a therapy of apnea with Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) also in a sectional view. Here, the airways are stabilized by means of slightly increased pressure of the breathing air.
Finally, we visualized different types of masks used for Continuous positive airway pressure (nasal pillow mask, nasal mask, full face mask).
