Illustration liver and gallbladder

Illustration of the position of the liver and gallbladder with surrounding organs (stomach, pancreas) and graphic of gallstones in the bile duct

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located in the upper right part of the abdomen, just below the liver. It stores and releases bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver that helps break down fats in the small intestine. The gallbladder is connected to the liver and small intestine by a series of ducts through which bile is transported and released as needed during the digestive process.

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in the gallbladder. They are made up of cholesterol, bile pigments and calcium and can range from the size of a grain of sand to the size of a golf ball. Gallstones can cause a variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and bloating. In some cases, they may not cause any symptoms at all. If gallstones cause symptoms or complications, they can be treated with medication or surgical removal of the gallbladder.
