Video treatment of trigeminal neuralgia with balloon compression

The animation shows the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia using balloon compression. A catheter is passed through the patient’s cheek to the base of the skull. Once the catheter is correctly positioned, a balloon placed at its tip is slowly inflated. The pressure on the Gasser ganglion of the trigeminal nerve temporarily damages these nerve fibers, which interrupts the transmission of pain signals and thus relieves discomfort.
