Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue that normally lines the lining of the uterus also grows outside the uterus. This abnormal tissue, called endometriosis lesions or endometrial lesions, can develop in various parts of the pelvic cavity, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, peritoneum, or other organs.
In the illustration, a female abdomen is shown in sagittal section. Inside the uterus, the normal tissue of the endometrium can be seen. However, endometrial tissue can also be seen outside the uterus (endometriosis ), such as in the Rectouterine pouch (between the intestine and the uterus), on the bladder, in the abdominal cavity and on the ovaries.
