Hyperthyroidism is a medical condition in which the thyroid gland in the body produces too much thyroid hormone. This leads to an acceleration of metabolism and can cause a variety of symptoms.
In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland in the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are vital regulators of metabolism and affect many bodily functions. Hypothyroidism leads to a slowing of metabolism and can cause a variety of symptoms.
This animation addresses the basic function of the thyroid gland and the causes and symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
In case of hyperthyroidism, the use of medication (thyreostatics) is shown. Thyrostatic drugs work by reducing the production and release of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland. This helps slow metabolism and control symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
In hypothyroidism, the underproduced thyroid hormone thyroxine is replaced with a drug (levothyroxine, L-thyroxine) that matches the body’s own hormone and brings hormone levels back into the normal range.
