Background:
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that are permanently implanted in the eye. In most cases, such a lens is implanted after the natural lens has been removed during cataract surgery. There are various types of intraocular lenses, each with different characteristics (multiple focal lengths, correction for astigmatism, etc.).
Project description:
In a previous project, 3D models of the various lens types were created for the client so that attractive illustrations of the lenses could be used on the website and in marketing materials. As part of the website relaunch, the client expressed a desire to integrate the artificial lenses into the website as interactive 3D models.
To this end, the models were prepared and exported accordingly. To ensure that the 3D models integrated seamlessly into the user experience in the browser, a small file size (and thus short loading times) was important. This aspect is particularly crucial for mobile users.
Compressing the 3D data (using Draco 3D Graphics Compression) reduced the file size from 1393 kilobytes to 118 kilobytes—without any visible loss of quality. Thanks to a compression rate of over 90%, the 3D model loads in about the same amount of time as an image (e.g., JPG) and integrates seamlessly into the website.
