Illustration esophageal motility study

Illustrations of an esophageal motility study, a procedure used to diagnose esophageal motion disorders.

Design of an illustration for the use of esophageal manometry (esophageal motility study) to diagnose movement disorders of the esophagus.

For this purpose, a probe with integrated pressure measurement points is advanced through the mouth or nose into the stomach. This is then slowly withdrawn while the patient swallows. With the aid of the probe, the pressure from the esophagus triggered by the act of swallowing can now be measured. The procedure thus provides information about the mobility of the esophageal muscles and the functionality of the upper and lower esophageal sphincters.
