Background:
A lithotripsy involves breaking up urinary stones (or gallstones) into small enough pieces that they can pass naturally (or at least be removed by other means). This is done either using shock waves from outside the body or an endoscope.
Project description:
The specific illustration deals with the removal of a kidney stone (nephrolith) that is blocking the ureter in the renal pelvis. The illustration shows a cross-section of a kidney, showing how an endoscope is inserted via the ureter and a laser fiber is guided through its working channel. During the treatment, the kidney stone is vaporized using laser energy.
