Illustrations Spondylolisthesis

Design of illustrations on the topic of spondylolisthesis, showing the severity grades according to Meyerding.

Background:

Spondylolisthesis is a condition characterized by instability of the spine in which a vertebra typically slips forward over the vertebra below it. The lumbar section of the spine is frequently affected. Spondylolisthesis can lead to instability, back pain, or nerve compression.

Project description:

We created a series of illustrations on anatomy and spinal disorders for a training app developed by Aesculap AG. The illustrations shown here focus on spondylolisthesis.

The first image shows a graphical representation of the five severity grades of spondylolisthesis according to Meyerding.

The overview illustration shows the condition of a spine with different severity grades. In focus is the displacement of the lower lumbar vertebra (L5) relative to the sacrum. According to the Meyerding classification, Grade I indicates a displacement of 0–25%, Grade II a displacement of 26–50%, Grade III a displacement of 51–75%, and Grade IV a displacement of 76–100%. In Grade V, the lumbar vertebra has completely slipped, a condition known as spondyloptosis. (Severity grades shown in image from left to right).

We also illustrated isthmic spondylolisthesis. In this condition, the narrow section of bone (pars interarticularis) between the upper and lower articular processes of a vertebra is fractured or torn. This allows the anterior portion, along with the vertebral body, to slip forward relative to the vertebra below it.
