Background:

The menisci are crescent-shaped cartilage discs located between the femur and the tibia in the knee joint. They act as shock absorbers and help distribute weight in the knee joint. A meniscus injury is an injury to the cartilaginous tissue in the knee joint.

Project description:

For use in doctor-patient communication and on the website of the SportClinic Zurich, we concepted and designed an animation on the treatment of a meniscus injury.

At the start of the animation, the location and function of the menisci in the knee are explained and the frequency of degenerative and traumatic damage to the inner and outer meniscus is discussed. Subsequently, the animation focuses on damage to the outer meniscus, distinguishing between damage located toward the interior of the joint and damage that occurs in the outer region. Since the central half of the meniscus is not supplied with blood to the interior of the joint, the only surgical option in this case is partial removal of the damaged parts of the meniscus. If the damage is on the outside, it can be treated/sutured with an anchor.
