Design of illustrations for the four stages of rhizarthrosis. This arthrosis affects the articular surfaces of the thumb saddle joint, i.e. the joint between the os trapezium and the carpal bone of the thumb. As the disease progresses, the articular cartilage becomes increasingly damaged and can no longer perform its protective and cushioning function in the joint. Furthermore the surrounding bone of the joint also changes (osteophytes) and the joint space is reduced, so that the joint is eventually destroyed.

Rhizarthrosis – stage 1 (incipient osteoarthritis, thickening and alteration of articular cartilage).

Rhizarthrosis – stage 2 (damage to articular cartilage, osteophyte formation)

Rhizarthrosis – stage 3 (increased osteophyte formation, visible cartilage damage, narrowing of the joint space)

Rhizarthrosis – stage 4 (cartilage loss down to the bone, joint space almost lost)
