Background:

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition in which the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. It is caused by overuse of the muscles and tendons in the forearm that attach to the lateral epicondyle, a bony bump on the outer part of the elbow. Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, pain that worsens when gripping or lifting objects, and weakness in the forearm. The condition is common in tennis players (tennis elbow), but can also occur during other activities.

Description

The Masalo cuff is a treatment option for epicondylitis. The cuff is worn around parts of the upper and lower arm and works on the countertraction principle. When the forearm is extended, the cuff pulls its muscles towards the elbow, reducing the strain on the tendon insertions.

For Masalo KG we created an animation that visualized the development of tennis elbow. In the second part we visualized how the Masalo cuff reduces the tensile load on forearm muscles and tendon insertions.

In terms of design, we focused on the representation of the upper and lower arm and the muscles relevant to tennis elbow in a glass human. The correct representation of the cuff when worn on the elbow and during movement of the forearm was important.
