Illustrations Adams Forward Bend Test

Design of illustrations of the Adams Forward Bend Test, a simple clinical test for detecting possible scoliosis.

Background:

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine accompanied by rotation of the vertebral bodies. When viewed from the back, the spine does not run in a straight line, as it ideally should, but rather in a “C” or “S” shape (depending on which sections of the spine are affected).

Project description:

For an e-learning app developed by Aesculap AG, we designed a series of illustrations depicting spinal conditions. In this example, we created three illustrations showing how to initially identify possible scoliosis using the Adams forward bend test. For this test, the patient stands upright with both feet about hip-width apart and the knees straight. The patient then slowly bends forward. The arms hang loosely at the sides, with the palms touching, and the head bends forward in a relaxed manner.

The examiner looks along the back – at the level of the spine. A unilateral protrusion of the ribs in the chest area (rib hump/gibbus) or a unilateral bulge of muscle in the lumbar region (lumbar bulge) is likely caused by twisted vertebrae and may indicate scoliosis.

Using a scoliometer, the examiner can more accurately determine the asymmetry or rotation of the vertebrae. However, the Adams test is only a screening procedure. Further diagnostic measures are necessary to diagnose scoliosis (X-ray / determination of the Cobb angle).
