So-called “frozen shoulder” (also known as Adhesive capsulitis) is a painful condition of the shoulder joint that leads to restricted movement. Typical features include pain and stiffness in the shoulder that often gets worse over time. In frozen shoulder, adhesions form in the joint capsule of the shoulder, causing the capsular tissue to thicken and the capsule itself to shrink. Inflammation is thought to be the cause of the changes.
The illustration shows a person performing an everyday activity that is painful in the case of Adhesive capsulitis. An enlargement shows the capsule of the shoulder joint.
