The imaging technique of scintigraphy injects radioactively labeled substances (radiopharmaceuticals) which are incorporated in tissues with increased metabolism. As a result, inflammations and diseased tissue changes can be visualized, e.g. in a cancer. Skeletal scintigraphy (bone scintigraphy) focuses on diseases in the bones. Again, metastases can be shown in cancers, but also the healing zone in fractures or other inflammatory changes (osteomyelitis or loosening of implanted endoprostheses).
