3D animation spinal stenosis

Creation of a 3D animation illustrating a narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), which is usually age-related.

Background:

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, usually caused by age-related changes in the spine. The spinal cord and major nerve bundles run through the spinal canal. The narrowing of the canal puts pressure on the nerves, which can lead to pain and limited mobility.

Project description:

For the Inselspital Bern, we created a 3D animation illustrating the processes and development of spinal stenosis. The video is used during the doctor-patient consultation to help the patient better understand their symptoms.

The video begins with a transparent human figure with a skeleton. The focus is on the lumbar spine, as this is the area most commonly affected by spinal stenosis.

Due to age-related wear and tear, the intervertebral discs lose height. In addition, they become looser and bulge into the spinal canal—where, in cases of spinal stenosis, they press on the spinal cord and nerves.

To compensate for the instability, bone is built up (enlargement of the facet joints) and the ligaments (ligamenta flava) thicken.

Thickened vertebral joints and ligaments put pressure on the nerves and spinal cord.
