Animation Arteriosclerosis

3D Animation of the development of an arterial plaque to a stenosis and finally a complete vascular occlusion.

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which the arteries in the body gradually become narrowed and hardened. This occurs due to the deposition of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances called plaque on the inner walls of the arteries. Plaque formation leads to a reduction in blood flow and can affect the elasticity of the arteries.

The animation starts with an artery in a sectional view. Blood components such as erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes flow in the vessel. The structure of the vessel wall is visible. In the further animation, the formation of a plaque in the vessel wall is now shown. The plaque grows and reduces the vessel diameter at the site. The blood accumulates at the constriction, the flow velocity is increased there and the overall blood flow is reduced.
