The monoamine theory of depression is a theory that attempts to explain the causes of depression. It is based on the idea that an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly monoamines such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, contributes to the development of depression.

The main features of the monoamine hypothesis are presented in the context of a 3D animation.
