Hormone replacement therapy (HTR) is a medical treatment that replaces hormones that the body no longer produces or does not produce in sufficient amounts. HRT is most commonly used to relieve the symptoms of menopause in women.
During menopause, the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body decrease, leading to symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness and sleep disturbances. Hormone replacement therapy aims to supplement the body’s declining hormone levels by providing synthetic versions of estrogen and/or progesterone.
Hormone replacement therapy can be administered in a variety of ways, including pills, patches, gels, creams, or vaginal rings. In this project, we demonstrated its use in the form of a spray. Its active ingredients penetrate the skin and form a depot in the stratum corneum over a period of 24 hours – which enables continuous release of the active ingredients into the bloodstream over the specified period.
